2011 Training Log – Week 42

Roller coaster week, highs and lows.  A lot less running than I had planned, but that’s just fine.  I’m still somewhat in recovery mode from Slickrock and there’s no need to push anything.  I’m not sore or anything, but I can tell from the pattern of having really good runs followed by really bad ones that I am not truly recovered yet.  Bighorn and Leadville were both around 3-4 days, but it looks like Slickrock will take 3-4 weeks.  Definitely took more out of me.

Monday
Bike – 28 miles

Did a steady 20 mile effort. Working, but not killing it. Averaged 21.9mph which wasn’t bad for only my second road ride since June. Couldn’t quite push hard enough through the wind to get 22.

Tuesday
Run – 7.3 miles

Two laps at Hildebrand. Amazing run. Felt strong. It was raining, and starting to get muddy. My hands were frozen, but my legs could do no wrong. I had the feeling like when I travel on business and leave my trusty (but gutless) Honda Fit behind and happen into something like a Dodge Charger at the rental counter. Just a little press of the gas pedal and the power is there.

Wednesday
Run – 5.4 miles

Running with a heavy heart is tough. Got the sad news last night of little Emma’s passing. Today was cold and snowy, first snow run of the year. Just wasn’t into it. Turned back early, did a bit of walking, tried not to let my eyeballs freeze when they would get a little damp with the thoughts. A special little girl that will be missed. We are better for having had her in our lives.

Thursday

No run. Cold day, a lot on my plate at work, and was in a dark place mentally. Got a late-evening call from Emma’s mom, asking if she could use some of what I wrote for the obituary. Of course there was no need for her to ask, but I was incredibly humbled that she took the time to do so and it was so nice to talk with her for a few minutes.

Friday
Run – 7 miles

Nice cleansing run on a beautiful day. Steady from start to finish.

Saturday
Run – 5.5 miles

Easy 5.5 at dusk with Malcolm. His first run in a week after being slammed with strep throat. Beautiful sunset running through Chatfield, good to get out with him again.

Sunday

Buried with homework of all things (taking a Java programming class). Hard to teach this old man new tricks. I am really good at shell scripting, but this Object Oriented stuff hurts my brain. No run.

Total: 5:26 – bike 28 miles / 1:29, run 25 miles / 3:57

Pic of the week – I wonder what these guys did for Halloween?

Biting the Hand that Feeds You

Is this thing on??

I have been making several changes to this site over the past two months.  I’ll talk about most of them in a future post, but for now I wanted to give a heads-up to anyone subscribing to the current RSS feed.  Please update your subscriptions with the new ones below.

I registered thescenebegins.com a few weeks ago and while the old url (thescenebegins.wordpress.com) will redirect your browser here just fine, the existing RSS feed broke when I made the switch.  I made a rookie move and inadvertently dumped a bunch of subscribers without realizing it.

Man, I am really bummed about that.

I decided to go ahead and establish new feeds with feedburner since I have already disrupted the flow and would have needed to figure out a method for switching over sometime in the future anyway.  Feedburner will let me change the underlying feed source if I ever decide or need to, while still maintaining a consistent address that is presented to all of the readers out there.  Hopefully, that will do the trick.

Long story short:

If you would like to subscribe to this site with a reader via RSS (posts and comments are available), click on the icons below or in the sidebar and you will be directed to the feedburner page where you can then select your reader of choice.  By the way, I am not using or planning on using this as a means to distribute any advertising.  If fact, I pay a fee to have all ads turned off.

For anyone making their way back here after I broke the feed.  Sorry about that, and thanks for coming back!  Things should be stable from here on out…

If you don’t have a clue what I am talking about, here is a short primer on RSS.  Using a reader to pull in RSS feeds is a very handy way to keep up with multiple sites and blogs that are always posting new content.  I prefer to use Google Reader to manage my subscriptions.  Give it a try!

You can also subscribe by entering your email address (no spam, no ads) in the sidebar and clicking on the ‘Follow’ button.  Doing it that way will route all new posts to your inbox via email.

However you do it, thanks for reading!

I tried to run today…

but my legs weren’t up to the task of carrying the load that was my heavy heart.  I went a little over two miles before coming to a stop as damp eyes blurred my vision of the trail ahead, and then walked slowly through the newly fallen snow while reflecting on last night’s news of little Emma’s passing.

She made it just over eight years.  Roughly 3,004 more days than than the odds said she could.  Even when you can see it coming from a distance, it is still difficult to accept that her time with us on earth has come to an end.

Her physical challenges were greater than anyone should have to bear, but her beautiful spirit is what we will remember most.  Even though the challenges ultimately proved insurmountable, she was always courageous, selfless, incredibly loving, and kind.

We will smile through our tears as we think of you.  Thank you for blessing our lives and for allowing us to bless yours.  Godspeed, Emma.
