2011 Year End Stats

Last year:

Loose goal for 2011 = 3,000 running, 2,000 bike…  We’ll see.

The stats:

Missed the bike goal by a long ways, but I did manage to squeak out 3,000 miles on foot in style with 26.2 on the final day of the year.  Works out to an 8.2 mile per day average.  It was just a few years ago when 8 miles was the longest run I had ever done.  Wow.

I still think my ideal year would be 3,000 run/2,00o bike, but I can see now that those numbers are pretty far out of reach due to available training time.  I miss the bike, but am not really willing to cut back on the running at this stage.

So, next year’s goal:

3,333 run / 999 bike

Staying healthy for running will be key.  I had two calf injuries this year that knocked me out for 10 days each.  That was a major victory over previous years when I have been out for 1-3 months at a time with various issues.  On the bike side, I need to get serious about incorporating a commute on at least a weekly basis (20 miles each way).  That will be one way to get some extra miles and replacing some behind-the-wheel time with saddle time.

Happy 2012!

2011 Training Log – Week 51

71 to go to hit 3,000…

Tricky week.  Had a tough time every day squeezing a run in.  Nothing long, had to make due with a couple of doubles and other bits and pieces.  My plan was to stack some miles up this week to make it easy to break 3,000 next week.  That didn’t happen, but the goal is still within reach.  Hopefully things will calm down a bit and I can get some good runs in.  It looks like the weather is going to cooperate.

Run – 7 miles

Very cold and slick with pellet-like snow. Pressed for time so went for a quick-ish 7. Here’s a peek into how my mind works while running sometimes:

A car starts to pull out of a church parking lot as I’m coming down the sidewalk.
They see me coming, and actually reverse and pull back to give me room.
Cool! Thanks!
As I was running along a busy road about 30 seconds later, I heard the car coming behind me.
I knew it was the same car because of the engine sound (nothing extraordinary, just a Subaru Forester).
I hadn’t tried to ‘memorize’ the sound, I just knew it.
I thought it was cool I picked out the engine sound like that.
Then it struck me.
Is it engine, or is it motor?
Hmmm.
Maybe it has to do with where the power comes from (external source vs. generated).
I never hear anyone say electric engine, it’s always electric motor.
Then I thought how train engines have a diesel generator that provides power to an electric motor.
Maybe combustion = engine.
But wait a minute.
Boats have motors.
They are combustion.
Detroit is motor city.
Hmmm.
That boat ride I took on Lake Michigan sure was cool.

2011 Training Log – Week 50

Hmmm.  137 miles left to hit 3,000 for the year.

Good week.  Getting into a good groove.  Not really training for anything at the moment, but I have been very consistent for the past few weeks.  Definitely one of the better Decembers I have had.  Time to start figuring out what’s next on the schedule.

Monday

Slogged through sugary/crusty snow for 5, then felt pretty zippy for the last 3 on the roads.

Hopped on the treadmill for another go at my Powerline simulator. Still making some tweaks.

Hill Reap Eats. Visualized nailing these, but reality said otherwise.

Hill was exactly .5 mile. I ran hard up and then turned right around and headed down for another. The legs were not up to speed, but I kept at it anyway. Pushing super hard on the first and second. After about dying when I topped out for the second time, I backed off just a little for the rest.

Traction was poor on glazed-over snow. It’ll be good to hit this again in another 2 weeks or so and see some improvement.

Another easy cruise.

Friday
Run – 21.5 miles

Satisfied with this run commute home from work. Didn’t feel great, but not bad. Strong and steady. This run let me know the training I am doing is working, but I am not feeling so beat up that I can’t enjoy a nice long run like this.
