Race Report: 2013 Pikes Peak Ponderous Posterior 50K
This wasn’t a race (for me, anyway) and it wasn’t a 50K (new course due to last summer’s fires). It’s just easier to file it that way on the blog.
I tried to avoid this event with a list of excuses a mile long, but ultimately could not stay away. I’m glad I went. It was a beautiful day on beautiful trails with a great group of runners.
I’m fat, out of shape, just recovering from a 10 day illness, and knew this was going to hurt. It was going to be a day for putting on the big-boy pants and showing up to take my medicine. I haven’t done any climbing or even run over 20 miles in one shot since October. I have eaten a lot of food, though.
Shorts and T-shirts were the order of the day. We usually get a week or so of mild weather in January and the Team CRUD guys have their race dialed in to hit it perfectly every time.
I felt okay for the first section, then the big climb took a bit out of me. My calves did their usual routine and I ran half of it with numb feet (no fun), but at least I didn’t have to stop. After that I got rolling with a nice group including Jaime and Hillary that cruised the length of Captain Jack’s at a great pace. Once we hit the aid station I was pretty much done for the day and spent the next few hours jogging and hiking along. It was so nice to be out there, I really enjoyed it (mostly). Definitely glad to have made the effort to get down there.
Big thanks to JT for hosting and to Team CRUD for putting on such a great event!
Shorts @ 7am on a January morning. One week ago I stepped out my front door for my Saturday run and it was 4 degrees.
Blue sky day.
A little cool in the deep canyons, but not too bad.
The terrain and trail surface reminded me of the North Fork 50.
Aid station mile 12. Grab some cookies.
Great views of Colorado Springs. I’m mighty jealous of the trail network they have down there.
Course marking was excellent.
Good medicine!!
This was mostly an excuse to stop and rest…
I hustled through the last part to squeak in under 5 1/2 hours. With 7 seconds to spare!
No wonder I was tired.
