2011 Training Log – Week 40
This week has been mostly about R&R after the Slickrock 100, and I’m liking it! After the Bighorn 100 and Leadville 100 earlier in the summer, I was back to more-or-less normal training within a few days. Those races were slow and didn’t beat me up too badly. Going into Slickrock, I told myself I didn’t want to come out of this one in any mood to start training again. Leave it all out on the course. I wanted to come back wrecked, shattered, barely able to move. All signs of what to me would indicate that I had pushed myself.
I was somewhat successful, but have started to get the itch to get back at it already. I think I’ll take it pretty easy for another week before I start doing much in the way of training again.
Monday
Ouch.
Tuesday
A little better.
Wednesday
Jogged a little bit with the dog.
Thursday
Run – 2 miles
Final XC meet of the year. Did the normal running around and taking pictures. Felt WAY better than I thought I would.
The kiddos did awesome. Malcolm made it through every single practice and meet, and was super consistent all season with his times all coming within about a minute of each other. Lindsey fought super hard all the way. I got a front row seat to the last .75 mile and was so excited to see her digging deep to finish just ahead of the girls that usually beat her.
During a lull in the race while I was standing around near another dad waiting for the kids to come through, I hear a dull thud behind me. I glanced back and didn’t see anything. A few seconds later, I heard it again. And again. Then the other dad turned to me and asked, “Did you hear that?”. Then I saw what it was. Incoming! Someone was launching apples onto the course from behind a fence across the street.
I sprinted through the cars and leaped onto the fence, pulling my head up over the top just as a teenage kid was reloading.
“Whatcha doin’ there, cowboy?”, I asked with a smile.
“Uh. Throwing apples.”, came the sheepish response.
I asked him to stop (or might have told him to knock it off), and he agreed.
I then cleaned up the apples before the runners came through and rolled an ankle on one.
Saturday
Bike – 25 miles
Got back on the road bike for the first time since June. Hairy legs and all. Mixed it up in a 12 man paceline for a while. Felt good all things considered.
Saturday
Nada.
Sunday
Zip.

2011 Training Log – Week 38
Sucky week. Bound to happen after being on a roll for the last few. I came down sick last Saturday night and was pretty miserable for several days. No sleep, taking medicine, still working and running. Got in all the miles, trying something a little different going into the Slickrock 100 in a week. I had a down week after Leadville, then got back after it. Since then I have held four weeks in a row over 70 miles. Certainly nothing extreme, but it felt like that was the sweet spot for now. Rather than back off this week, I stayed at that volume. We’ll see how that plays out, but I seem to feel better if I keep the legs working a bit rather than easing up.
Monday
Run – 10.3 miles
Sick. Ran anyway. Sucked.
Tuesday
Run – 10.3 miles
Hilly route. Ran hard on the ups (14 of them), and cruised the rest. Breathing like I smoke 3 packs a day.
Run – 6 miles
Easy jog at the track in the dark while waiting for the kiddos.
Wednesday
Run – 4 miles
Easy run.
Thursday
Run – 10.3 miles
Finally feeling a tiny bit better. Good cruiser run @ 7:55 pace. Average heart rate was 151, about 6-8 beats too high. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s noticeable. It’ll drop back down once I’m all the way better.
Friday
Run – 7 miles
Easy jog.
Run – 3.1
A bit of jogging around during the XC meet.
Saturday
Run – 17 miles
This run went by really fast. Didn’t feel awesome, but not bad. Time to start thinking about a taper for Slickrock…
Sunday
Run – 3 miles
Easy treadmill.
Total: 10:56
Run 71 miles

2011 Training Log – Week 37
Another good week. Except for coming down with a cold today… Feeling strong on the run. Got in two 20 milers this week, plus a lighter speed session. Looking for more of the same for this week if I can kick the sickness.
This week marks my 5th anniversary of running. I checked my training log and it looks like I put in 9 miles for the week, with the first run being 2.1 in 22 minutes.
Monday
Run – 21 miles
Long evening run on the East/West Trail. Tired from getting up at 4am Denver time to get home from Chicago.
Tuesday
Run – 6 miles
Horrible run. Very tired and sluggish. Knew I’d feel better the next day if I did something, though.
Wednesday
Run – 10.3 miles
Good one. Didn’t hold back, and didn’t push. Just let the legs do what they wanted to.
Thursday
Run – 7.8 miles
Lightweight speed session. Knew I was too worked over from the weekend for the full deal, so just did 4 x 800m.
Friday
Run – 21 miles
Same run as Monday, 5 minutes faster. Longest run to date in the Trail Gloves. Legs felt pretty strong on this one.
Saturday
Run – 6.1 miles
Easy cruise up into the state park and back. Felt much better than I thought I would after last night’s long run.
Sunday
Sick 😦
Total: 11:15
Run 72.2 miles
