Photo Shoot: 2014 North Fork 50K / 50 Mile Trail Races
I’ve been part of the ultrarunning game for over seven years now, and I’m reluctant to admit that I haven’t ever paced anyone. What’s up with that?!? I was finally going to get my chance at the North Fork 50 mile race this weekend.
My original plan was to get up at 04:00 and catch the start of the race. That didn’t work due to a sick kiddo, but I was able to make it up to Pine Valley Ranch around 9:00 and seeing that I had my camera riding shotgun on the drive up I decided at the very last minute to carry it with me (DSLR w/70-200).
I jogged up the course in reverse, and was able to take shots of the 50k and 50 mile runners as they approached. My goal was to get to the Meadows aid station around 2pm and wait to pick up my runner for the final 18 miles.
I had a great time seeing so many friends out there running, crewing, and volunteering. It really made me happy to get a solid dose of the ultra vibe that I’ve been missing for a while.
Unfortunately, my runner missed the cutoff at that aid station. Very bummed for him, but super happy that he gave it a shot. It was the push I needed to get up there and be a part of the race.
I left that aid station a little after 4pm and made my way another 12 miles (26 total) back down to my car, hanging out and chatting at the aid stations along the way.
I’m posting some sample photos, the full gallery with free downloads for the runners is here:

It was a great way to spend the day!
Photo Shoot: 2014 Mother’s Day 5K
Rather late in posting, but I wanted to get this one up before the triathlon shots from yesterday.
This was a very well attended first-year race in Highlands Ranch that took runners on a fairly challenging route past the iconic old windmill that overlooks the city. I came away with several shots I was happy with and the Colorado Photo Company booth had a successful day as well. We sold two framed pieces, another print, and five posters. Fun day!
LOVE these glasses!
The rest of the day’s shots can be found here.
Photo Shoot: Highlands Ranch Windmill
Tomorrow is the second race in the 2014 Highlands Ranch Race Series. The Mother’s Day 5K is being run on a course that is normally off-limits to the public. It takes place almost entirely on private land occupied by the Highlands Ranch mansion and is currently being used for cattle grazing. It is a unique historical property, that gives visitors a feel for what the area was like before the development of Highlands Ranch.
The old stone windmill is the iconic feature of the area, and offers a commanding view of the city below and of the mountains in the distance. I was asked to create an image of the windmill to use as the first place finisher awards for the race, and was given access to the property to get some shots.
It was a fun process, I enjoyed the ‘assignment’ aspect that gave the process a different feel from what I normally do. I made three trips to the area at different times of day and collected the following photos.
The Race Director selected the morning panoramic shot to use for the awards, and had Mona’s Art to Go in Steamboat Springs mount them using their special frameless mounting process to create the final product.
I used the same image to create a commemorative 11 x 17 print that some of the runners have been purchasing in advance of the race. We will also be selling it at the Colorado Photo Company booth on race morning.
The prints can be purchased through this link.
It’s looking to be a great event, with over 500 runners registered so far. Remember to smile for the camera!
